Majority of Android Antivirus Apps Ineffective, Unreliable

  • Google Play Store for Android Chrome OS might soon have squircle shaped icons

55 percent of the tested apps offered insufficient malware protection.

AV-Comparatives reports that just 80 of the 250 apps detected more than 30 percent of the 2,000 malware samples with no false positives (100 non-malicious control apps were installed as well).

Whereas some of these blacklisted apps are just posers doing nothing other than duping users and cashing in on their ignorance and vulnerability, others are outright risky as they even got flagged by other malware-detection apps.

Android fans who enjoy downloading new apps and games via the Google Play Store should be happy to know that the Android parent has recently released a new update for this service.

Each of the over 200 applications spotted by researchers has since been removed from the Google Play Store via Google's policies but some of those were extremely popular. As we mentioned earlier, there will be more uniformity across the apps from June 24 on the Google Play Store.

The offering of so many ineffective or deceptive apps could prove confusing to users.

He also ranks second all-time on Miami's career passer rating list, behind only Pennington (94.5) and ahead of Dan Marino (86.4). He became the Dolphins' starting quarterback as a rookie in 2012 and has still never taken a postseason snap.

Researchers have found an adware in 206 Android apps that have 150 million downloads at the Google Play Store.

The apps had been downloaded an estimated 111 million times, accordion to Check Point, and are the first known example of of malicious apps that bypass the Android sandbox to install malicious apps.

Android apps can no longer access the Android operating system's clipboard data unless they are in focus (running in the foreground aka on screen).

Besides fraudulently distributing ads among infected devices, the malicious apps can generate phishing pages and then open them in a browser, lending itself to targeted phishing attacks against specific users. Users will not see changes on apps listed in Google Play Store on other form factors including Android TV, Wear OS and Android Auto. In some cases, the apps are simply buggy, e.g. because they have poorly implemented a third-party engine. AV Comparatives says it found more apps this year doing this than it did during tests the organization conducted last year.

Use only trustworthy AV, not this garbage that after scan makes you uninstall nearly all of your apps because its nonsense detection rules.

Some apps would even block themselves, in instances when the devs would forget to whitelist themselves. Instead of masking malware as an anti-virus product, the questionable products did actually have anti-malware functions but at a much less effective level than the best AV products.
