Labour: MPs must reject May's Brexit deal

  • Labour leader Corbyn demands general election after Theresa May’s Brexit defeat

Corbyn's amendment was defeated by 318 to 302 votes.

The government will publish guidance for businesses on tariffs and proposals for the Irish border in the event of no deal on Wednesday morning. "No deal is better than a bad deal but I have been working for us to leave on 29 March and leave with a good deal".

Mrs May is hoping to make a third attempt to get her Withdrawal deal through Parliament in the next week - despite it being rejected by MPs twice.

The idea of modifying the Brexit deal or delaying it has not been well received by the Prime Minister and the Conservative Party.

If no-deal is rejected, MPs will vote on Thursday on delaying Brexit by extending Article 50 - the legal mechanism that takes the United Kingdom out of the EU.

The extension will need to be agreed by all 27 of the other members of the European Union at a meeting on 21 March.

Meanwhile, the Labour hierarchy - Mr Corbyn, shadow chancellor John McDonnell, chief whip Nick Brown and shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer - held talks with two backbenchers who have put forward a plan to back Theresa May's Brexit deal in exchange for a referendum.

Labour's official policy is to keep the option of a second referendum on the table and Jeremy Corbyn's MPs had been ordered to abstain when the issue was pushed to a vote in the Commons.

But he did not mention his party's commitment to back another referendum. "In the last 24 hours Parliament has decisively rejected both her deal and no deal".

The ill-tempered feel to the match continued throughout a nervy second half as a number of strong challenges went unpunished. At the beginning of the match, we lost too many balls, due to their pressing, we had tension, we were not at home.

But although she managed to convince about 40 Tory MPs to change their mind, it was not almost enough to overturn the historic 230 vote defeat she suffered on the same deal in January.

A Labour Party spokesman said they had a "useful and constructive discussion" with Peter Kyle and Phil Wilson "as part of Labour's engagement with MPs across Parliament to find a practical solution to break the Brexit deadlock". In addition, 10 Conservative MPs abstained, defying May.

Corbyn added: "She needs now to show leadership". We will vote to extend Article 50 for a few months.

The government also announced it will not introduce any new checks or controls, or require customs declarations for any goods moving from across the border from Ireland to Northern Ireland if the United Kingdom leaves the European Union without a deal.

'The Government is in real problems because they are trying to fool the people into somehow believing that somehow or other the deal she has offered is the only one that is available'.

Meanwhile the United Kingdom government has said it will cut tariffs on a range of imports from outside the European Union and introduce measures to avoid a hard border in Northern Ireland in a no-deal scenario.

A second referendum before the end of the year is now priced around 2/1.

The DUP's Ian Paisley said he would like to see the no-deal option left on the table in negotiations.
