  • Johnson and Johnson lawsuit payout

A whopping 13,000 similar lawsuits have been filed across the country against the massive health care company.

Johnson & Johnson must pay about $29 million to a dying California woman who blamed asbestos-tainted talc for causing her cancer, the company's latest loss in nationwide litigation over its iconic baby powder.

Plaintiff Teresa Leavitt is a mother of two who said J&J's talc products were used on her as a child, and she used it herself into adulthood, Bloomberg reports.

A U.S. jury found the company's talcum powder-based products were defective and it had failed to warn consumers of subsequent health risks.

One juror said after Wednesday's verdict that she probably won't buy any more J&J baby powder. Exposure to it may increase risks of a number of diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma.

It cited problems with legal procedure and evidence, and said lawyers for the plaintiffs failed to show that the powder contains asbestos, noting that "their own experts concede that they are not recognizing the accepted definition of asbestos and are ignoring crucial distinctions between minerals that are asbestos and minerals that are not".

In 420-0 vote, House says Mueller report should be public
I'm tempted to write "Since when do congressional Republicans defy Trump?" but today would be the wrong day to make that point . Democrats speculate that the report might have enough evidence to support an impeachment effort against the president.

The investigations followed a Reuters report that claimed that J&J knew about the presence of asbestos traces in its products for the last 50 years and failed to disclose this to national regulators and customers.

Montagnino emphasized that several cases have gone in favor of Johnson and Johnson and that there have been multiple mistrials. Johnson & Johnson is still appealing the verdict.

A court in the USA state of California ordered Johnson & Johnson to compensate a woman to the tune of $29 million for cancer complications she developed from using the company's talcum powder, according to media reports.

Amid the scrutiny, Reuters late past year published a report alleging that J&J knew about asbestos in its talc for decades. Among the recent verdicts include Los Angeles jury's award of $21.7 million to a woman who accused the company of causing cancer to her with its powder products. When asbestos fibers are breathed in, they travel to the ends of small air passages and reach the membranes of the thorax and lunges. Johnson & Johnson has repeatedly pointed to studies that have not shown such a link.

Mesothelioma is a bad form of cancer (as if any form of cancer isn't terrible) and Johnson & Johnson will have to do a much better job of convincing juries that their products don't cause cancer.

J&J has already faced defeats in a number of cases.
