As Deadline Looms, Brexit Needs More Time

16 March, 2019, 18:42 | Author: Lucille Rivera
  • British lawmakers voted on Thursday night to allow the government to seek a delay for Britain's departure from the European Union. but the Conservative Party is still severely split

It will have to abide by the European Union trade rules without having a say in European Union decision-making as it would not be a member.

But it was denounced by the Leave Means Leave campaign, whose vice-chairman Richard Tice said it was time for "new leadership" which would deliver departure on World Trade Organisation terms.

DUP figures and British ministers this weekend are attempting to hammer out a deal or compromise so British prime minister Theresa May can get her Brexit deal through Westminster.

The Prime Minister survived a vote of no confidence in her leadership of the Tories, in which a majority of Tory MPs not on the ministerial payroll called for her to go, with party rules opening her up to another challenge from December. If it goes through she plans to ask for a short extension ending before the new MEPs take their seats in the European Union parliament on July 2 after elections in May.

Unless May can get a Brexit deal approved by the British parliament, then she will have to decide whether to delay or cancel Brexit or thrust the world's fifth largest economy into chaos by leaving without a deal.

May has said she will hold another vote next week on her deal, although lawmakers have already rejected it twice.

The government whipped its MPs to vote against all proposed amendments; while the Labour party announced before the vote that it would not formally back any amendment supporting a second referendum.

I was very disappointed in the result, it hurts more than anything, but it's not like we can look at the performance and say we were s**t because we weren't'.

Mrs May's de-facto deputy, Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington, said he hoped the United Kingdom would leave in an orderly fashion but if Mrs May's deal was not approved then a long extension was on the cards.

A senior European Union official is floating the possibility of a two-step delay to Britain's departure from the bloc, now scheduled for March 29.

Parliament voted this week to seek to delay Britain's departure until at least June 30. Parliament needs to make a decision on the deal.

Theresa May is planning to hold another "meaningful vote" on her withdrawal deal by Wednesday - after it was overwhelmingly rejected on two previous occasions.

With less than two weeks before Britain is due to leave the EU, Mrs May seems to be clinging on to her waning authority by a thread after a series of humiliating defeats. He said: "Today I reiterate my conviction that a deal can be agreed based on our alternative plan that can command support across the House".

The minister was in London for arguably the most sensitive of the government's St Patrick's Day missions overseas as European leaders began considerations on what type of delay could be granted for the UK's exit.
