  • 49 Dead In 'Terrorist Attack' At 2 Mosques In Christchurch, New Zealand

People wait outside a mosque in central Christchurch, New Zealand, Friday, March 15, 2019.

Earlier, a gunman opened fire on Friday prayers at a mosque in New Zealand killing many worshippers and forcing the city of Christchurch into lockdown as police launched a massive manhunt.

The suspect appeared before a Christchurch court on murder charges, in white prison clothing, barefoot and handcuffed.

None of those arrested had appeared on a watchlist of New Zealand or Australian security agencies, police have confirmed. He said he survived by played dead, but was desperate to know what happened to his friends who were there with him.

"I live in New Zealand because the first time I came here in 2011, I found a place that was heaven on earth and I made a decision to bring my family to live here in peace, away from all the troubles", a Palestinian man said.

The number of people identifying as Muslims rose by 28 percent between 2006 and 2013, according to Stats NZ, and just over a quarter were born in New Zealand.

"I believe coming [to the memorial] is a way to show our support for the community, but also for our Muslim brothers and sisters, I also think it's really important to show our children how hate crimes affect our society", she said.

One other man was arrested on Friday for carrying a firearm in his auto in order to get to his family home while the city was in lockdown, and was released by police without charge. One person was later released.

"It's been 36 hours, I haven't heard anything about them", he said.

An Aberdeen man who fled for his life after chaos erupted all around him in the wake of the New Zealand terrorist attack said he fell into a "complete panic" soon after the shooting began.

Ms Gray said Tarrant passionately worked in a program that offered free training to kids in the community. A man who claimed responsibility for the shootings left a 74-page anti-immigrant manifesto in which he explained who he was and his reasoning for the attack. Tarrant has spent little time in Australia in the past four years and only had minor traffic infractions on his record.

Mr Morrison said there had been discussions between Senators Mathias Cormann and Penny Wong about a bipartisan motion when Parliament returns in April.

Law enforcement officials in other cities across the country, including NY and Los Angeles, have also said they are increasing security forces at mosques in response to the shooting.

One man who said he was at the Al Noor mosque told media the gunman was white, blond and wearing a helmet and a bulletproof vest.

Bush said police had found two improvised explosive devices in one auto, a clarification from an earlier statement that there were devices in multiple vehicles. "One leg of an injured [person] needed to be amputated while another suffered bullet injuries in his chest", he said. Forty-one people were killed at one mosque, and seven people were killed at the second mosque.

In gruesome video footage, which The Post is not publishing, the attacker approaches the entrance to the mosque and raises his weapon.

"Both Martin and Lockie felt personally uncomfortable making the trip to Dunedin given the events in Christchurch, and also, the feelings and concerns of their partners and families", said Auckland Cricket High Performance Manager Simon Insley. The country's previous deadliest shooting took place 29 years ago in the small town of Aramoana, where lone gunman David Gray murdered 13 people following a quarrel with a neighbor.

He escaped out the back door and climbed over a wall when he saw people fleeing and realised what was happening. He said one was slightly injured. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube all said they had taken steps to remove copies of the videos.
