James Gunn is directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 again. At the time, Gunn had publicly apologized for the tweets saying he "regretted them for many years since.' The 'Guardians" cast released an open letter later that month in full support of Gunn. In the end, while this can not have been an enjoyable ride for James Gunn, he seems to have emerged stronger than ever: given the reins to two high-profile franchises, now a household name, and enjoying the goodwill of fans and peers.

Gunn was sacked past year following the resurfacing of offensive tweets that made light of child sex abuse. Post firing, Disney President Alan Horn met Gunn on a few occasions to discuss the whole matter.

James Gunn was sacked past year in July by Disney after a few alt-right journalists made his old tweets public.

This will please all Guardians of the Galaxy and James Gunn fans and we hope that this gets confirmed by Marvel soon.

"The best thing about being raped is when you're done being raped and it's like 'when this feels great, not being raped!" another tweet read.

James Gunn returns to Marvel, no impact to The Suicide Squad

"My words of almost a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative", his July 2018 statement read. "I am tremendously grateful to every person out there who has supported me over the past few months", he wrote.

In an interview with the Sun in 2017, Gunn revealed that his involvement with Marvel was going to extend past Guardians 3.

Gunn added a thank you to Disney and said he was excited to "continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all". But in the wake of his firing, Gunn lined up DC's Suicide Squad 2 for rival Warner Bros. That led him to reverse the decision and bring Gunn back.

The first two Guardians films have made a combined $1.63 billion at the box office worldwide, spawned two spin-off attractions at Disney's theme parks, and even influenced Marvel Comics to change the original comic characters to more closely align with the versions from the movies.

With The Suicide Squad due on August 6, 2021, that should mean Guardians will probably not hit theaters until any earlier than 2023 at this stage.
