  • An injured person is loaded into an ambulance following the mass shooting at the Al Noor mosque in Christchurch New Zealand on Friday

Speaking after the attack the Bangladeshi cricket coach Mario Villavarayen said the players heard shots being fired when they fled the mosque.

Multiple casualties are feared in a "critical incident" early Friday as gunshots were heard near a mosque in New Zealand's east-coast city, worldwide media reported, with the Bangladeshi cricket team narrowly escaping danger.

"Police are responding with its full capability to manage the situation, but the risk environment remains extremely high", they tweeted.

According to Newshub, there were 29 shots heard inside the mosque, with multiple injured and reports of six people killed.

In response to "a serious ongoing firearms incident", police said all schools have been placed in lock-down.

Residents have been asked to remain indoors and report suspicious behaviour.

The national public broadcaster Radio New Zealand quoted an eyewitness who said, "There was blood everywhere".

"Entire team got saved from active shooters!"

The Associated Press reported a witness saying there were many were dead in the shooting near Hagley Park.

The man was charged with intent to commit an indictable offence, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious damage. The incident began when the attacker, carrying a bow and arrow, confronted the man outside his house, police said.

The Bangladesh team's analyst Shrinivas Chandrasekaran added: "Just escaped active shooters".

It is understood that the team was on a bus after it had gone to the mosque situated near Hagley Oval where Bangladesh and New Zealand were scheduled to play a One Day International on Saturday.

About 300 people were inside the mosque for afternoon prayers. Schools and public buildings were on lockdown.

Bangladesh have been touring New Zealand since last month.

"I've lived next door to this mosque for about five years and the people are great, they're very friendly", he said.

A man in the mosque at the time, who would not give his name, said there were "bodies all over me".

A Black Caps spokesman told the Herald nine of the team members live in Christchurch and are now at home with their families.

"Frightening experience and please keep us in your prayers".
