  • A storm system lashes Mozambique

After much damage and displacement, Cyclone Idai has finally made a landfall at late night and early morning of Friday in Mozambique near the port of Beira, wherein the latitude and longitude were 19.6°S and 34.8°E. "Cyclone Idai is expected to be the largest the area will see in a decade".

"The average max wind speed around the depression is 15 knots (100km/h)", she added.

Paul Herbst of IPSS said: "The teams will be supported by Lenmed Maputo Private Hospital in the country today, thereafter heading north to Beira where the cyclone's epicenter will reach land closer to the weekend".

Matabeleland is a region which covers a considerable part of the south western plateau of Zimbabwe.

"There's some cloud and light rain; we're not expecting anything heavy".

The storm is expected to deliver a massive punch to the country when it hits, as pre-storm flooding in Mozambique has already killed 66 people. It followed Tropical Storm Desmond, which hit in January.

"The waves have decreased to 4m or 5m and by this evening the sea state would have calmed down", Maliage said.

Gunshots reported near mosque in New Zealand
According to Newshub, there were 29 shots heard inside the mosque, with multiple injured and reports of six people killed. In response to "a serious ongoing firearms incident", police said all schools have been placed in lock-down.

Weather service Windy.com showed that the storm was off the east coast of Mozambique, with winds already in excess of 100km/h.

Cyclones are typical for Mozambique at this time of year, but there are concerns that the weather patterns have been increasing in intensity.

Government emergency services had yet to give an update but the South African Weather Service (SAWS) said the cyclone was moving inland, northwest of Beira.

Mozambique ranks third among countries in Africa most susceptible to weather-related hazards, according to the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery.

And according to reports, the tropical cylcone was packing winds of more than 200km per hour.

South African officials are working with their counterparts in Mozambique through the National Joint Operations Centre to share information on the storm and its likely impact.

The group has said it was ready to deploy 70 staff, along with 4x4 vehicles, boats, and jetskis to help with rescue efforts.
