  • Police officers guarded the entrance of the Raul Brasil State School in Suzano Brazil Wednesday after authorities said two teenagers entered the school and began shooting at students

Police work at the scene of a shooting at a school in Suzano, Sao Paulo metropolitan region, Brazil, on March 13, 2019.

Military police Colonel Marcelo Sales said the two attackers "shot at the owner of a gas station", who is now receiving hospital treatment, before entering the school.

Authorities say five students and an administrator at the school were killed.

Around 15 others were injured in the shooting, which took place at the Raul Brasil public school in Suzano, on the outskirts of Sao Paulo in southeast Brazil.

Police said they also found a bow and arrow as well as items that appeared to be explosives.

Kelly Milene Guerra Cardoso, 16, said she and other students took refuge in the school's cafeteria, locking the door and lying on the floor.

The school has primary and secondary students, and the identities of the victims and the alleged attackers have not yet been released.

"I heard a lot of screaming", she said.

In 2011, 12 students were killed by a gunman who roamed the halls of a school in Rio de Janeiro, shooting at them.

Security cameras from homes near the school showed children climbing and jumping over a wall that surrounds the Raul Brasil building, and sprinting down streets, screaming for help.

"A monstrosity and cowardness without equal", Bolsonaro wrote in a tweet expressing his sympathies for the families of the victims of Wednesday's attacks. Police arrived eight minutes after the shooting started and did not confront the gunmen, who had already killed themselves, he said.

While gun laws are considered strict in Brazil, it is not hard to illegally purchase a weapon. Castro's body lay near Monteiro's, with the crossbow on the ground between the pair.

"It's a very sad scene - the saddest thing I've seen in my entire life", said Sao Paulo Governor João Doria.
