  • Nancy Pelosi says impeaching Donald Trump 'just not worth it'

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has recently repeated her longstanding views regarding President Donald Trump and impeachments.

When she became House Speaker in 2007, she resisted pressure from her liberal flank to launch impeachment proceedings against former president George W. Bush over the Iraq War. But McGovern - who has been on the Hill since he began as a House staffer in 1981 - says Pelosi is doing the right thing by not moving to impeach. While Mueller's report and investigations in Congress and by NY prosecutors could change the dynamic, for now, "Pelosi's right - he's not worth it, just in terms of obsessing over him".

Reacting to her comments, Steyer suggested Pelosi's stance was "politically convenient".

Schiff, whose committee has been investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election, told reporters an impeachment effort seen as partisan would be doomed.

"I'm not for impeachment", Pelosi told The Post's Joe Heim.

Ms Pelosi has been a vocal critic of the suggestion of impeaching Trump.

According to a recent Morning Consult tracking poll, 86 percent of Republicans and 43 percent of independents oppose the initiation of impeachment proceedings (only 36 percent of independents favor this step).

Green said he would respect the House's role in the matter, and noted that President Andrew Johnson was impeached for much lesser offenses than Trump.

"If we wait on Republicans, who are not going to buy in, then there won't be an impeachment", he said.

Rep. James McGovern, a 12-term Democrat from MA who is also a member of the House Progressive Caucus, calls the president "unfit", "sad" and "pathetic".

The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives could pass articles of impeachment and start the process tomorrow, but what next?

The bottom line: Pelosi has enough headaches on her plate without resorting to a divisive fight over impeachment. "We can get the information we need".

"At some point, people will look to see what did we do when we had an unfit president and we had a Constitution that allowed us to remove an unfit president", he said.

"I think they will expose a lot of the illegal, corrupt and crimes that this president - that I believe that (have) existed and there will be sufficient proof to show that", he said.

"Every single Democrat running for president should be made to answer: do they agree with the Speaker who stands in opposition to baseless impeachment charges, or will they risk fracturing the country by bowing to the radical elements in their party who want to disenfranchise the American people and overturn the legitimate and lawful result of the last election?" said Trump campaign press secretary Kayleigh McEnany.

Unless collusion is found, getting the votes needed in the Senate to approve the impeachment of the president is highly unlikely.

"Having said that", Courtney added, "there are certain circumstances, which I don't think we're in right now - sometimes you just have to do what you have to do if the country's at great risk".

"It absolutely drives him nuts", she said. "It was unnecessary and the rest", she told the Post. In response, Washington congressmember and Progressive Caucus co-chair Pramila Jayapal said that congressional investigations should determine the appropriate course of action, and that evidence of a "consistent pattern of abuse of power, [or] of obstruction of justice" would be grounds for impeachment.
