  • Catherine Shaw had been travelling in the central American country for two weeks

A British woman missing in Guatemala left her hotel with a puppy which was later found alone.

She had been staying in the Lake Atitlan area of the country and was last seen by a friend the previous night.

The trust said it had received many sightings of female travellers matching Catherine's description, and it had become clear that there are at least three travellers similar to her hiking in the area.

Police announced Monday that her body had been found unclothed and in a state of decomposition in the brush near a mountain overlook. She was reported missing later the same day.

She left again for the last time at 5.23am, heading in the direction of the lake.

Locals, expats, law enforcement, and global agencies made a taskforce to hike around the area, and search for the 23-year-old, the Facebook group Finding Catherine Shaw wrote.

He confirmed that all her belongings had been left behind, adding "Not knowing anything about Catherine, Elena returned to our hotel on Thursday afternoon asking after her and that was when Catherine's belongings were handed to her".

The Lucie Blackman Trust, which has been helping Ms Shaw's family, said "foul play was probably not involved".

In a statement, they said: "She has always been really good about keeping in touch and informing us of her whereabouts".

"Thank you to everyone who has helped in the search". An investigation has been opened.

The charity criticised people on social media whom it said are circulating photos of Shaw's dead body. The charity's chief executive, Matthew Searle, suggested that Shaw had been fasting, and could have died from lack of sustenance.

It added: "Formal identification has not taken place but the body is believed to be Catherine". "She died doing what she loved".
