A number of Honda models are also being recalled including the 2001-2005 Civic, 2003-2005 Civic Hybrid, 2001-2005 Civic GX NGV, 2003-2011 Element, 2007 Fit, 2002-2004 Odyssey, 2003-2008 Pilot and 2006-2014 Ridgeline.
The inflator that failed was a replacement installed in 2015 under the terms of a prior recall. The chemical can deteriorate when exposed to high temperatures and humidity, blowing apart a metal canister and hurling shrapnel.
These vehicles were already part of the largest and most complex automotive recall in USA history, covering at least 50 million Takata airbag inflators in 37 million vehicles from 19 manufacturers, according to NHTSA.
Honda said in a statement that owners will be notified by mail in early April, but replacement parts from manufacturers other than Takata are available to begin the recall immediately.
So far, 23 people have been killed because of this malfunction.
"Honda initially became aware of a potential issue after a single-vehicle crash involving a 2004 Honda Odyssey", the Japanese auto giant said in a statement.
An investigation later showed that manufacturing issues at Takata's Mexico facility introduced excessive moisture into the inflator during assembly, leading to the problem.
This set of recalls is part of the largest series of automotive recalls in US history, which includes as many as 70 million vehicles recalled. They contained a moisture-absorbing chemical and previously were believed to be safe.
