Turkish Airlines officials issued a statement confirming the flight "encountered an unusual turbulence about 40 minutes before landing" in NY.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement to ABC News that a Turkish Airlines Boeing 777 landed safely at 5:35 p.m., after declaring an emergency and reporting that several passengers were injured due to turbulence. Most suffered minor injuries, including bumps, bruises and cuts.

The plane was rocked by severe turbulence and caused passengers to be thrown from their seats.

The plane was carrying more than 300 passengers and crew members.

Another passenger Sead Nikaj, told the network "nobody announced it or anything like that so we figured out something was wrong".

The New York City-bound Turkish Airlines Flight 001 had 326 passengers and 21 crew members on board. Turkish Airlines officials were not immediately available for comment.

It was the second incident at a major New York-area airport on Saturday.
