Apple's Augmented Reality Headset Could Go Into Production This Year

  • Simple Apple AR glasses tipped for 2020

Reliable Apple tipster Ming-Chi Kuo claims, via 9to5Mac, that manufacturing of the AR goggles may start as soon as October 2019, "no later than the second quarter of 2020". Not only that, it appears that the company is fast-tracking the effort, too, as a new report is circulating online suggesting that Apple may begin mass production of its new AR glasses this very year.

Those two virtual-reality (VR) headsets from Google and Samsung are essentially shells that rely entirely on smartphones to run and display games and other VR apps.

Designing the AR glasses to work as an iPhone accessory is also expected to allow Apple to keep the glasses slim and lightweight, rather than trying to pack in all the processing hardware into the one device. The iPhone would do much of the computation, wireless networking, and global positioning, while the AR glasses would only process their fine position/orientation and display. But for now, we just have to wait a bit more until the end of this year to get more stuff on these AR products. The glasses will depend on the iPhone for the majority of the computing. Magic Leap's wearable computing package consists of a circular computer and a battery pack meant to be worn on the body, while a cable connects those components to pair of smart goggles. Most rumors and inside reports have called for a less-than-ambitious Apple approach in this fledgling market, and Kuo is once again supporting the iPhone-connected theory.

Algeria orders early holidays to deter student-led protests
Despite a ban dating back to 2001, demonstrations have been staged nearly daily in Algiers since a massive rally two weeks ago. The Algerian leader has been in power since 1999 but has been all but absent from the public eye since a stroke in 2013.

Kuo has been accurate in the past when making predictions about upcoming Apple products. Most recently, the firm scooped up Akonia Holographics, a startup that makes displays for augmented reality (AR) devices. Each lens will reportedly have an 8K display- which puts the best TVs today to shame.

The next Apple smartphone will also likely bend the knee to augmented reality in ways not yet seen in the iPhone. However, we do trust Apple to sort out these issues before launching the headsets.

Tim Cook talked a bit about the limitations of AR glasses back in 2017. "But it will happen, it will happen in a big way, and we will wonder when it does, how we ever lived without it".
