IPhones with Aftermarket Batteries are Now Eligible for Repairs by Apple

  • Apple is reportedly changing its controversial third-party iPhone battery repair policy

Now, three "reliable sources", according to MacRumors, confirm that there has been an internal policy change.

That's according to an internal document spied by MacRumors and iGen, which notes that iPhones with third-party batteries in them will be eligible for fix at Apple's so-called Genius Bar.

The comes after Apple began allowing the fix of iPhones with third-party displays in 2017. Ars has reached out to Apple for an official statement.

Previously, Apple had instructed the Genius Bar and AASPs to deny service of any kind for an iPhone with a third-party battery, regardless of the circumstances. It did not matter if the requested service involved the battery or another component of the handset. Such device is now apparently eligible for service at Genius Bar in Apple Store as well as through Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP). It will now allow repairs on iPhones even if they have batteries not certified by Apple. First, it makes it much more affordable to replace an entire iPhone if something is wrong with its third-party battery (it now costs between $49 and $69 to replace batteries in out-of-warranty iPhones that don't have AppleCare+).

On Friday, Trudeau did not take questions from reporters - a departure from past cabinet shuffle events at Rideau Hall. But earlier this month, she had resigned from Trudeau's cabinet; so has the latter's close confidant, Gerry Butts.

Bottom line: Apple appears to be relaxing its strict fix policies.

Before this, Apple had changed their fix policy back in 2017 when they declared that iPhones with third-party screen repairs are eligible for warranty coverage if the repairs do not involve the display.

These fix policy changes reportedly went into effect on February 28, and it's not the first time Apple has changed its servicing rules.
