NIWA meteorologist Ben Noll said Tropical Cyclone Oma was not out of the question, with experts keeping an eye on its developments, but it seemed to be tracking towards Queensland, Australia.

"We're advising people not to actually stand on the sand and get close to the waters edge".

Strong winds, rain and 3m to 4m waves are forecast toward the end of the week as Oma - now near Vanuatu - moves southwest.

"Bundaberg's weather will be interesting over the weekend", she said.

Oma is now swirling north of New Caledonia, with the Fiji Metrological Service - whose area of responsibility it now lies in - upgrading the system to a category three cyclone.

Even if Tropical Cyclone Oma didn't strike, it did open the door for a low to come in from the Tasman Sea and move across the country. Hard, dry soil could mean flooding for some areas because rain won't be easily absorbed into the ground.
