Katy Perry's Shoe Line To Be Pulled From Shelves Amid Blackface Backlash

Both feature two eyes, a nose and red lips. However, the black style has critics pointing out the resemblance to classic blackface makeup.

The shoes have reportedly also been taken off shelves at U.S. retailers.

Perry's whimsical "Rue Face Slip On Loafers" and the high-heeled version, "Ora Face Block Heel Sandal", will reportedly disappear from shelves, with retailers apparently trying to head off any controversy surrounding the shoes.

At the time of writing, neither pair of shoes is available on Katy Perry Collections' site nor on Dillard's online, though they were available on Dillard's earlier Monday.

Sources close to the 34-year-old singer told TMZ that she designed the shoes as a part of an entire collection and that they were never meant to be offensive. HuffPost reached out to Perry, her brand and Dillard's for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

In December, Prada also apologised and pulled a monkey bag charm that resembled blackface.

Perry and Global Brands Group issued the statement saying they did not have any intention to inflict any pain. The black model could be construed to look like someone wearing blackface. According to Gucci, the top was "immediately removed" from its website and all physical stores.

On Wednesday, Gucci said it "deeply apologizes for the offence caused by" its balaclava sweater in a statement posted on Twitter.
