Heartland Democrat Klobuchar joins 2020 White House race

  • Race for the White House: Midwestern senator throws her hat in the ring

"We've had over the years a number of people - even when Amy was running for re-election in the Senate this past November - who said that she would make a good candidate for president", Bill Bessler said. Klobuchar joining the race adds a pragmatic voice from the heartland state of Minnesota to an ever-growing field of contenders hoping to unseat US President Donald Trump. Klobuchar has won each of her three Senate elections by more than 20 points.

Klobuchar began her foray into Minnesota politics by advocating for better access to health care for babies and new mothers after her own daughter was born with health complications, a personal narrative she is likely to use in the debate about the future of the nation's health care system.

Klobuchar, who easily won a third-term a year ago, is the most prominent candidate from the Midwest to enter the race.

Klobuchar grew up in the Minneapolis suburbs, where her father was a columnist for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "Amy showed that the rule of law should still matter and, as she said, the Constitution does not say, 'We the ruling party, ' it says, "We the people'".

Klobuchar, who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, gained national attention for her intense line of questioning during Justice Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing to the Supreme Court. Republican leaders, meanwhile, cast doubt on her ability to govern as the country's chief executive.

Klobuchar delivered a message centered around unity and shared values, frequently referencing Minnesota's history and her family's ties to it.

Not everyone at the announcement was there to support Klobuchar. Trump often overlooks evidence of record global warming and conflates cold spells and other incidents of weather with climate, which is long-term.

"Senator Klobuchar loves her staff ― they are the reason she has gotten to where she is today", a campaign spokesperson said in a statement to HuffPost.

Klobuchar recently delivered a speech that was nearly a point-by-point rejection of the president's policies and of the country's toxic divides, she said, "We are exhausted of the shutdowns and the showdowns, of the gridlock and the grandstanding". "I have neighbours. I have all of you".

She would join Democrats who have already announced their 2020 bids, including California Sen.

"She'd left hints in different interviews about deciding to run", said Lori Peters of North Mankato. Klobuchar is known for putting partisanship aside to pass legislation, something that has earned her a devoted following in Minnesota, and something American voters regularly tell pollsters they want. "She is proud of them and the work they have done for Minnesota".

But current and former staffers have come forward to defend the senator.

She later ran for Hennepin County prosecuting attorney in 1998 and was re-elected in 2002.

Klobuchar is expected to deliver a message of unity, vowing to fix a country she claims is fractured, according to excerpts of the senator's expected remarks given to ABC News.
