Former club Stoke, who broke the news, issued the statement from his family.

Banks was born in Sheffield and won 73 caps, winning FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year six times.

Banks was part of the England team that won the 1966 World Cup and was credited with making the "Save of the Century" when he denied Brazilian great Pele at the tournament four years later.

His family said Banks, who lost an eye in a vehicle crash in 1972, had passed away in his sleep.

Gordon Bank's family confirmed this morning the 81-year-old passed away in his sleep.

He played every minute of the 1966 World Cup campaign, including the 4-2 win over West Germany in the final - still the nation's only triumph to date. We are devastated to lose him but we have so many happy memories and could not have been more proud of him.

His death was announced by Stoke City, one of the clubs he played for in addition to Cheseterfield, Leicester City, Cleveland Stokers, Hellenic, Fort Lauderdale Strikers and St. Patrick's Athletic.

Emery defiant as leaky Arsenal fail to convince again
Arsenal have more than one way of qualifying for the top four, the Premier League as well as winning the UEFA Europa League . Lacazette was on the scoresheet for Arsenal , but conceded the Gunners need to make more chances.

We, at Soccer Laduma, send our condolences to the family and friends of Gordon Banks.

England manager Gareth Southgate said: "I am deeply saddened to hear of Gordon's passing".

The Brazil No 10 drove his header towards the bottom corner of the goal and Banks, flinging himself to his right, in a feat which seemed to defy the laws of physics, somehow managed with one hand not only to keep Pele's powerful downward header out, but also flick the ball over the bar.

A League Cup victor with both the Foxes (1964) and the Potters (1972), Banks was the FWA Footballer of the Year in 1972, while also being named in FIFA's World Cup All-Star Team in 1966, after playing a key role in the Three Lions success on home soil.

The former Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown isn't dead - this Sky News presenter just made a mistake.

While fans were also taking to social media to pay tribute to the England legend. Obviously we shared 1966 but it was more than that.

Gary Lineker said: "Oh no. Gordon Banks, an absolute hero of mine, and countless others, has died".
