His smuggling exploits, the violence he used and the sheer size of his illicit business made Guzman the world's most notorious drug baron since Colombia's Pablo Escobar, who was shot dead by police in 1993.

The world's most infamous cartel boss Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, who rose from poverty in rural Mexico to amass billions of dollars, was found guilty in a US court on Tuesday of running a violent gang that smuggled tons of drugs into the United States.

Jurors in a federal court in Brooklyn have delivered a guilty verdict on all 10 charges in a high point of the 11-week long trial, with several of the carrying a life sentence. He faces a possible sentence of life in prison at a proceeding the judge scheduled for June 25.

The 61-year-old Guzman broke out of Mexican prisons twice before he was finally recaptured and extradited to the United States in 2017.

Jurors have reached a verdict in the case of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán, the Mexican druglord accused of carrying out a sprawling criminal enterprise as chief of the Sinaloa cartel. When the jurors were discharged, he leaned back in his chair to catch the eye of his wife, who gave him a subtle thumbs-up.

The defense case lasted just half an hour.

U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue called the conviction "a victory for the American people who suffered so much" while the defendant poured poison over the borders.

But Jeffrey Lichtman added he can "proudly say" the defense "left it all on the battlefield".

Mr Peña Nieto denied it, but the allegation fit a theme: politicians, army commanders, police and prosecutors, all on the take.

Kyler Murray Picks NFL over Major League Baseball
The deal called for him to receive $1.5 million after approval last summer by Major League Baseball and $3.16 million on March 1. Murray has already begun training in preparation for April's NFL Draft, his statement said.

Guzman's wife left the courthouse without speaking to reporters.

Former beauty queen Emma Coronel Aispuro onboarded the muscle last week, sources close to the Guzman family said, as publicity surrounding her husband's trial caused her to fear for her safety.

But his sing-songy voice filled the courtroom, thanks to recordings of intercepted phone calls.

Chapo was detained by the Mexican government in 2014 but escaped a year later.

Recaptured drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is escorted by soldiers at the hangar belonging to the office of the Attorney General in Mexico City, Mexico, on January 8, 2016.

Asked what he was wearing, she replied: "He was naked".

The drug boss escaped from prison twice - once in 2001 by hiding in a laundry bin, and again in 2014 when he escaped through tunnels on a specially adapted small motorcycle.

"Why? Because he is guilty and he never wanted to be in a position where he would have to answer for his crimes", she told the jury.
