Rescue workers in South Africa have pulled a newborn baby from a storm drain in a four-hour operation that ended with whoops and cheers from onlookers.

Cllr De Boer said some residents told her that they heard the baby crying as early as 1am and thought it was cats mating.

Medics said she may be suffering from hypothermia but otherwise appeared unhurt. She is basically stable enough for transfer to one of the base hospitals where they can sort out the social side.

Rescue Care Paramedics, one of the groups that helped to extricate the infant girl in Durban, says it is unclear why the baby was "dumped" and that police are investigating.

She was subsequently airlifted to Albert Luthuli Central Hospital to be treated and then taken to another unnamed facility.

In the interview with Winfrey this week, O'Rourke called Trump's push for the wall a "racist response to a problem we don't have". The El Paso rally is Trump's first since the November midterm elections and comes at a precarious moment for his presidency.

Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert McKenzie said paramedics worked for three hours to get to the baby and were delighted to rescue her alive.

"It's good news for the ending of this rescue today", he said.

The baby, who locals have named Storm after the water drain in which she was found and her tempestuous start to life, will go into the South African care system.

It is not known how the baby got there, or who the mother is.
