  • Spotify takes aim at ad blockers - news

This shouldn't be confused with the "Active Listening" feature Spotify has been testing in some territories since last August, which lets listeners choose to skip some ads if they don't want to listen to them.

According to a report from previous year, around 2 percent of free Spotify users use apps or accounts that disable the ads between the songs. Users found in breach of the rules could have their accounts suspended or terminated.

An account termination is much more likely, and swift, if Spotify discovers you are the one creating and distributing software that blocks the ads. In an email to users today, the streaming music and podcast platform said its new user guidelines, "specified that all types of ad blockers, bots, and fraudulent streaming activities are not permitted". The terms will go into effect on March 1.

Spotify's free service allows users to listen to music without a monthly subscription, but plays advertisements periodically and provides limited account functionality compared to Spotify Premium. "Spotify has multiple detection measures in place monitoring consumption on the service to detect, investigate and deal with such activity".

The shift in policy coincides with other major announcements from the company, including the news that for the first time since its founding in 2006 Spotify was able to turn a profit. It will terminate offending accounts immediately with no warnings, and no second chances.

Spotify also announced this week that it was making significant headway on its podcasting ambitions by acquiring Anchor and Gimlet Media, the latter of which includes podcasts such as Reply All and Crimetown.
