Sorry NBC, We Won't Stop Talking About Tulsi Gabbard

  • Rep. Tulsi Gabbard lashed out at NBC News over a report suggesting Russian propagandists are beginning to support her campaign for president

Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard on Sunday stood by her decision to meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in 2017, saying that American leaders must meet with foreign leaders "if we are serious about the pursuit of peace and securing our country". A Samoan-American, she was the first Hindu elected to Congress.

With all that's been going on in the White House over the past couple of years, the 2020 election campaign is set to be one of the most historic presidential campaigns ever.

To reduce Gabbard to some kind of Russian stooge, as NBC did, would mean buying into the idea that it's implausible for someone who has seen war close up to want to avoid it if other alternatives exist.

She joins an already crowded field for the nomination, throwing her hat into the ring the day after New Jersey Senator Cory Booker announced he was running for the White House.

Making her informal announcement to CNN, Gabbard said she considers access to healthcare, criminal justice reform and climate change to be key concerns for her campaign. Her fact-finding meeting with Assad may have provided the information she needed to present her constituents with a more complete assessment of the situation. During her first 12-month tour, she received the Meritorious Service Medal and during her second tour, she was commissioned as a second lieutenant after graduating from the Accelerated Officer Candidate School at the Alabama Military Academy.

Gabbard, who met with Assad during a 2017 "fact-finding" mission in Syria told MSNBC's Morning Joe Wednesday he is not an enemy of the us, despite the ruthless leader having used chemical weapons against opposition forces inside his own country.

Democratic nominating contests begin in February 2020.

Asked if she viewed Assad as an "adversary" of the US, Gabbard demurred and said it was important to look at who posed a threat to the US and how the interests of other nations compare to those of the US.

The ex-KKK Grand Wizard previously endorsed Donald trump during his 2016 presidential campaign. The sudden reveal reportedly came as a shock to the congresswoman's team, sending it rushing to firm up her campaign's infrastructure including its website and publicity.

In 2017 she expressed skepticism over the Trump administration's conclusion that Assad's government was behind a chemical weapons attack that killed dozens in Syria.

The congresswoman later said USA troops should not be in Syria. "Those opposed to Iraq/Libya/Syria regime change wars are called "dictator-lovers" or "cozy" with evil regimes", Gabbard tweeted on Wednesday.
