The card, obtained by the Post in an open records request, lists Warren's alma maters of the University of Houston and Rutgers Law School but no other racial identifiers.

Fellow 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls remained quiet, while others in the party anxious the controversy could cause her campaign to falter even before she formally announces on Saturday.

When Warren began working at Harvard University in 1995, she approved being listed as Native American. "Tribes, and only tribes, determine citizenship", Warren said.

The lingering questions about her claims - as well as a 1986 document published by The Washington Post on Tuesday in which she wrote that her race was "American Indian" - are an unwelcome distraction for her campaign days before she is expected to make her candidacy for president official.

Warren also expressed regret for her history of leveraging her Native American identity for professional gain in a Tuesday interview with the Washington Post. Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. lambasted Warren in an op-ed for the Tulsa World. "I can't go back", the senator told the paper.

In an effort to put the issue behind her, Warren released a video that included a DNA test of her heritage. She admitted she does not have tribal citizenship and apologized for it.

"Nothing about my background ever had anything to do with any job I got in any place", she said.

Museveni rejects proposal to market curvy women to attract tourists
In 2017, 1.32 million tourists visited the country - up from one million in 2016. Tourism is on the rise in Uganda, where most visitors travel to see its wildlife.

"I told him I was sorry for furthering confusion about tribal citizenship", Warren said.

The private apology was earlier reported as focusing more narrowly on a DNA test she took to demonstrate her purported heritage, a move that prompted a ferocious backlash even from many allies.

"It's not exactly how you'd want to enter the arena" as a presidential candidate, said Paulette Jordan, a former Democratic state representative in Idaho and a member of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe who became the party's gubernatorial nominee a year ago.

An unnamed Warren aide speaking to CNN didn't dispute that the card was legitimate, nor did the aide challenge that the card contained Warren's handwriting.

"They mishandled it from the minute that she was presented with evidence that she isn't Native American", said Scott Ferson, a Democratic strategist in Boston. "We had a good conversation".

Waleed Shahid, a spokesman for the liberal group Justice Democrats, praised Warren's apology as confidence-building "with people in the Democratic Party electorate who are skeptical about the way she's handled this issue".
