Amazon Reportedly Reconsidering NYC HQ2 Over Backlash From Residents

  • Amazon rethinks plan for New York HQ amid fierce opposition, report says

Though, unlike in Virginia, where elected officials passed the state's incentive package fairly quickly, approval from NY is not expected until 2020.

Amazon may not deliver a new headquarters to New York City and that could mean big moves for CT.

Amazon is reconsidering plans for a new headquarters in NY amid a torrent of public opposition.

The deputy majority leader of the Senate, Michael Gianaris, who represents the Queens district, is against the deal, saying the multi-billion-dollar company does not need state subsidies, and that local residents weren't consulted.

Amazon did not directly confirm or deny the story, but released the following statement: "We're focused on engaging with our new neighbors - small business owners, educators and community leaders".

They've questioned whether its "worth it" to build the campus if NY politicians are opposed, one source told the Post.

About 25,000 new jobs were expected to be brought to the city with Amazon's plans.

"If Amazon does not come to NY, it's because of the political opposition". The financial incentives NY lavished on Amazon to lure the company there also troubled some liberals. "If they stop Amazon from coming to NY, they're going to have the people of NY to explain it to", he said on Friday, according to Capital Tonight reporter Nick Reisman.

Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos (above right) also owns The Post.

Wright is a nice wing to add, and extra picks are never bad, but a second-rounder from the Raptors isn't exactly that exciting. He spent 11 seasons with the Grizzlies and is the franchise's all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocks and made field goals.

"If they stop Amazon from coming to New York they're going to have the people of New York State to explain it to", Cuomo said.

Ocasio-Cortez, who has been extraordinarily negative towards Amazon, which has promised 25,000 jobs and over $27.5 billion in tax revenue in 25 years, tweeted that "everyday people" can "effectively organize against creeping overreach of one of the world's biggest corporations".

According to the Post, in the past two weeks, the state Senate nominated an outspoken Amazon critic to a board where he could potentially veto the deal.

Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, a supporter of the deal who offered to change his name to Amazon Cuomo if the company agreed to choose New York City, would have to approve Gianaris, but that would create a standoff between the governor and the legislature, reflecting the tensions that have accompanied the Amazon deal.

In one sign of opposition, artists spray-painted Amazon's logo - spelled "AMAZNO" - on streets near the proposed site.

Amazon is set to start construction on its second headquarters in 2020.as long as the company decides to stick with its original plans. "If Amazon or any organization is looking for a new corporate home, I know everyone involved in this most recent effort stands ready to roll up our sleeves once again".

At the outset of its search a year ago, Amazon said it was looking for a business-friendly environment.

He told the Guardian: "Amazon has extorted NY from the first day of this process, and this seems to be their latest effort to do that".

Critics also say the project would drive up rent and tax New York's already troubled transit system. What benefit the company would actually get was unclear.
