Kate Middleton visits schools for Children's Mental Health Week

This is part of the government's ongoing work to build a seamless and coordinated mental health and addictions system of care in B.C. Which includes a strong focus on children and youth, as well as prevention and early intervention.

'Schools and teachers don't have all the answers, nor could they, but we know they can play a special role'. These trials are key to improving our understanding of how practical, simple advice can help young people cope with the pressures they face. "Mental health issues in children are increasingly a worry and we need to improve access to help and support services".

The duchess also had a chance to say hello to the school's dog, little Herbie.

Middleton also asked the children if they enjoy spending time with their family and what they like doing with them.

"She also said her son George had found a piece of charcoal in a fireplace and told her: "'Mummy I'm going to draw a picture' - that's what's so nice you can do it from all around you".

Both primary and secondary pupils will be taught exercises drawn from mindfulness practice, breathing exercises and muscle relaxation techniques, which will help "regulate their emotions". "It impacts their lives at home and school", said Katrine Conroy, Minister of Children and Family Development.

Children's Mental Health Week continues until 10 February.
