  • Foreign Secretary call with Juan Guaido: 30 January 2019

Some three million Venezuelans have left the country since 2015, according to the UN.

Venezuela has been rocked by protests since January 10 when Maduro was sworn in for a second term following a vote boycotted by the opposition.

While the US has provided foreign aid to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, the crises plaguing these three nations have deep roots in of Washington-sponsored attempts to eradicate left-wing and socialist movements across Latin America.

Russia, along with China, Iran, Turkey, Mexico and other states, has voiced support for Maduro as the only legitimate president of Venezuela. He did not know where the gold might be heading or the nature of the transaction. A Venezuelan central bank spokesperson didn't respond to calls or text messages seeking comment.

- National security adviser John Bolton tweeted that traders should not deal in gold, oil or other commodities "being stolen" from the Venezuelan people. All, without exception, have said they are coming for the oil of Venezuela.

Twenty tons is a lot of gold bars - nearly 1,600 of them. That amount would reportedly represent about 20 percent of the country's holdings.

Guaido argues that Maduro was re-elected in a sham election past year, and is invoking two articles of Venezuela's constitution that he says allow him as the leader of the national assembly to assume the presidency and call elections when the current president is holding power illegitimately.

Temporary Shutdown, Permanent Harm? National Parks Will Continue To Suffer
The rally was originally planned to call for an end to the shutdown, but went forward anyway despite Friday's announcement. Huguenot Head, the 17th-highest peak in Acadia National Park, towers over the Tarn during winter.

Last week, Guaido swore himself in as interim president before a crowd of his supporters.

European Union governments will move to recognize Juan Guaido as Venezuela's interim president from next week, but using cautious language for fear of setting a precedent for political crises, two EU diplomats said on Friday.

An "international contact group" announced Thursday by the EU's top diplomat, Federica Mogherini, "should help to cease the usurpation of power by Maduro and establish a transitional government until new elections", said Francisco Sucre, who heads the worldwide committee of the opposition-led National Assembly. He has scored key victories in recent days on this front.

He has said the National Assembly head, Mr Guaido, self-declared claim to the presidency in an attempted US-backed coup. The latest measures posted on the U.S. Treasury's website suggest the sanctions could have an even wider impact on the petroleum exports that constitute the nation's economic lifeline. Americans who work for non-U.S. companies must stop doing any business with PDVSA by March 29.

The U.S. government and Guaido are trying to appoint a new board of directors for Citgo.

"The conditions favor Guaido, with decisive worldwide support headed by the United States, while the aggravated economic crisis plays into that as well", analyst Carlos Romero told AFP.
