Report says Foxconn could scrap manufacurting plans here

  • Chinese tech firm Foxconn is considering scrapping factory plans touted by President Trump

The company said that it remained committed to creating as many as 13,000 jobs in Wisconsin, and continued to "actively consider opportunities" involving flat-screen technology.

Despite Foxconn's failed promise to bring a bounty of blue collar factory jobs back to the Midwest, its development center that it now says will be staffed by scientists and engineers still could cause flooding and environmental issues for Racine County in Wisconsin.

Earlier this month, Foxconn reiterated its intention to create 13,000 jobs in Wisconsin but said it had slowed its pace of hiring.

The Taiwan-based company billed the massive 20 million-square-foot Wisconsin campus as its first North American manufacturing site for the next generation of liquid crystal display panels to be used in a wide variety of products.

In an interview with Reuters, Woo noted that the high cost of making advanced TV screens in the United States, where labor costs are comparatively high, was a factor.

Unveiled at the White House in 2017, the 20-million square foot Mount Pleasant campus was destined to become the largest greenfield investment by a foreign-based company in US history.

He said that would represent a supply chain that fits with Foxconn's current "fluid, good business model". He said it would be more profitable for the company to make the displays in Japan and China and assemble them in Mexico, rather than build them in the US.

Assembly Minority Leader Gordon Hintz, D-Oshkosh, said in a statement that Foxconn has "overpromised and under-delivered". The latest developments in the troubled deal cut by Wisconsin Republicans, the largest ever state subsidy to a foreign corporation, raises new questions about their actions in a sore loser post election session to roll back accountability and increase their power over the agency administering the agreement.

President Donald Trump (c.) joined Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (2nd from l.) and Foxconn CEO Terry Gou (2nd r.) at the groundbreaking of the company's Wisconsin plant last summer.

Foxconn previously walked away from a plan to invest $5 billion and create 50,000 jobs in India, and similar deals in Vietnam and Brazil.

Trump came to power on the back of a promise to revitalise USA manufacturing and create millions of jobs, crucially wooing blue-collar workers.

Economic development officials and other supporters of the project urged patience, saying Foxconn still plans to invest what it promised.

Some "details about the continuing evolution of this project will require further review and evaluation", Brennan said in the statement. They said he had created an air of economic uncertainty by supporting elimination of a manufacturing tax credit program. When all state and local incentives are added up, Wisconsin's Foxconn package totaled roughly $4.5 billion.

It had already fallen short past year, hiring 178 full-time employees rather than the 260 targeted, and failed to earn a state tax credit worth up to $9.5 million.

The plans, and the jobs, may now be curtailed or even killed. Research, assembly, and packaging would be the focus, suggesting that a product could be designed in Wisconsin, sent over to China for manufacture, and then shipped to the U.S. for final assembly, packaging, and shipment to consumers.
