Huawei: What do the U.S. indictments say?

  • Conservatives slam Liberals for handling of Meng Wanzhou case

January 28: The U.S. Justice Department unseals charges against Huawei, Meng and several of the companies' subsidiaries, alleging not only violation of trade sanctions but also the theft of trade secrets.

Canada has until March 1 to assess a US request to extradite the chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies a case that's sparked an unprecedented diplomatic dispute as Washington broadens its attack on the Chinese technology giant.

Canada's authorities, in cooperation with the U.S. DOJ, arrested Huawei's CFO Meng Wanzhou late past year.

The Justice Department in Canada informed media sources a formal request for Meng's extradition had been received from the United States.

The firm was also accused of technology theft on the same day China's top trade negotiator arrived in Washington for high-stakes talks with USA officials, possibly complicating the discussions ahead of a March deadline to avert a deepening of their trade war. Thus, if the Huawei affair is not amicably resolved in due time, then it is unlikely that Washington and Beijing could reach any sort of consensus on other aspects of their trade relationship, much less the more serious security issues such as the South China Sea or the Korean Peninsula.

The charges against Meng, filed in federal court in NY, allege that between 2007 and 2017 she, Huawei and the subsidiaries sought to mask their business with Iran in violation of U.S. and United Nations sanctions on the country.

"We strongly urge the United States to stop the unreasonable crackdown on Chinese companies including Huawei", said the statement", adding that it will assist the "lawful rights and interests of Chinese companies".

For the occasion, she wore a strapless white dress with silver detail while her husband donned an olive green button-down shirt. The Charlotte Observer reported in 2015 that the Jonas family's roots in North Carolina can be traced back to the 1760s.

It's expected to be a short appearance and it wasn't clear whether Meng, the daughter of the Chinese tech giant's billionaire founder, would herself be showing up in court alongside her team of lawyers or whether only the lawyers would be in court.

Following Meng's arrest, China arrested two Canadians on national security grounds.

"China should be concerned about criminal activities by Chinese companies - and China should take action", Acting US Attorney General Matt Whitaker said at a news conference with other Cabinet officials. Meng was charged with bank and wire fraud to violate American sanctions against Iran. Also charged are two of the company's affiliates and its chief financial officer, Meng Wangzhou.

Within the indictment, it is alleged an unnamed Huawei "founder" lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about its business dealings in Iran. "One is an issue of state subsidies" regarding Beijing's subsidies, he said.

Tensions were first aroused over the arrest of the corporation's CFO Meng Wanzhou on 1 December 2018. It is alleged that Wanzhou aided Huawei to avoid sanctions on doing business in Iran, which if proven, could have put multinational banking organisations at risk of breaking those sanctions too.

Her arrest further aggravated U.S. Both countries should be clear that they will uphold worldwide norms and global law when it comes to trade relations.

To make matters worse, the DOJ says after T-Mobile discovered the operation and threatened to sue, Huawei produced a false report claiming the theft was the result of rogue employees and not a company-wide effort to steal trade secrets.
