Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp to Unify Across Platforms

Facebook is planning to link WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger together to allow messages to travel between the three platforms. This decision has been taken by the company prior to its launch of unifying messaging system among the three popular social apps, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. According to the spokesperson, they're working on making more of their messaging products end-to-end encrypted.

After the integration, that is anticipated to be completed by either the end of this year or the start of 2020, it was claimed a user could seamlessly message a user of Facebook Messenger via WhatsApp for instance.

Previously, Facebook had been reprimanded by European Union lawmakers for attempting a monopoly on mobile messaging, to which Zuckerberg had put forth the argument that users are not without choices because the average American uses eight social apps.

Sam Weinstein, a professor at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, said that the integration of the messaging apps and services is expected to make it tough for antitrust regulators to disintegrate Facebook by ruining its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp.

Maybe. At the moment, all you need for a WhatsApp account is a phone number, though you need to verify your identity for Instagram and Facebook. "Imagine how different the world would be if Facebook had to compete with Instagram and WhatsApp".

"The documents appear to demonstrate that Facebook is willing to cause actual harm to children and families in its quest for profit", the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, Electronic Privacy Information Center, Public Citizen and other groups write in a letter sent to Zuckerberg Tuesday.

"One of these is that WhatsApp now requires only a telephone number to register, whereas Facebook Messenger demands people's real identities".

The report notes that all the integration isn't going to be an easy task. "That would have encouraged real competition that would have promoted privacy and benefited consumers", Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), a lawmaker who represents much of Silicon Valley, said last week. Acton quit Facebook in 2017 and Koum left the company last April. Facebook's intention of merging their messaging services has spurred concerns about privacy and calls for antitrust regulation. Facebook didn't splurge billions of dollars on Instagram, WhatsApp and its Oculus virtual-reality company to leave them alone forever.
