Apple FaceTime glitch lets you silently snoop on others

  • Apple Q1 2019 Results – $84.3 Billion Revenue, The First Holiday Quarter Decline Since the iPhone's Introduction

By adding their own phone number and then starting a Group FaceTime call, they could hear audio from the other person's phone before the call had been accepted or rejected.

To do this, users would have to start a new FaceTime video call with the person they wanted to listen to.

The bug was demonstrated through videos online and reported on this week by tech blogs.

The bug is part of the group video calling feature, which Apple added to its iPhones in October as part of the software update iOS 12.1. This will create a group FaceTime call and automatically answer the call for the first person.

The iPhone maker had earlier said it was "aware" of the issue and planned to release a software update later this week to fix the problem.

There’s a Huge Bug in FaceTime. Disable It Now
Here's how it works: an iPhone user calls someone else on FaceTime , taps Add Person and adds their own phone number. In brief You might want to disable FaceTime on your iPhone , iPad, or Mac until Apple patches this bonkers bug.

In the meantime, any iPhone that's ringing with an incoming FaceTime request is potentially listening in to its surroundings and sending the data back to the caller.

Still, social media is unsurprisingly flooded with warnings from all corners that people need to disable FaceTime on their devices until that fix arrives. Meaning, I could see and hear the person who had not answered the FaceTime call.

If the receiver happens to use the power button to decline the call, it activates the receiving device's camera, allowing you to watch what is happening at the other end. The bug presents a significant privacy issue, one call recipients may be unaware of as they contemplate whether or not to answer. After all, if users can't trust a relatively simple service like FaceTime to protect their privacy, why would they buy into Apple's greater narrative that it puts privacy above all else?

After years of relative inactivity, with iOS 12, Apple greatly enhanced and expanded FaceTime.
