"We are grateful for everything they have accomplished and their commitment to SpaceX's mission", the company continued.

The decision to trim down was "only due to the extraordinarily hard challenges ahead", SpaceX pointed out.

The statement did not disclose the amount of layoffs, but a source said on background that it was 10 percent. Ten percent would mean at least 600 people will be laid off.

The so-called test hopper will not enter orbit when it launches in the coming weeks but is instead meant to inform how SpaceX works toward a full-scale prototype of the Mars Starship. The first trip around the moon could be expected in the year 2023 with the help of this Starship. Highlights include its multibillion-dollar contracts to resupply the International Space Station and develop a space taxi for NASA astronauts, plus last year's maiden launch of its Falcon Heavy rocket.

SpaceX, which has developed reusable rockets and is working on Starship for a future anticipated Mars mission, gets most of its income from launching payloads for both private companies and the USA government.
