Trump visit to US cemetery in France canceled due to rain

  • Paris was covered in clouds with drizzling rain through most of the day

The White House initially said that poor weather had precluded flying a helicopter to Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial on Saturday.

Mr Trump was scheduled to pay tribute at a ceremony at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in Belleau, about 85km east of Paris, with his wife.

Yesterday, Trump attended a scheduled event honouring American war dead at a USA cemetery just outside of Paris.

The US leader was heavily criticised for cancelling a trip to Belleau Wood battlefield in northern France on Saturday due to the rain, with some critics accusing him of disrespecting America's war dead.

President Donald Trump could not attend a commemoration in France for USA soldiers and marines killed during World War One on Saturday because rain made it impossible to arrange transport, the White House said.

Speaking at Suresnes cemetery in the western Paris suburbs Trump hailed the "great warriors who gave everything for family, country, God and freedom".

Trump was scheduled to join dozens of world leaders Sunday at a ceremony in the shadow of the Arc de Triomphe marking Armistice Day.

Adding to a growing wave of derision, a United Kingdom minister of defense expressed his critique of Trump's decision to avoid a key commemorative event on Saturday due to the rain.

The terrible consequences of fire in California
A series of wildfires in Northern California's wine country last fall killed 44 people and destroyed more than 5,000 homes. Clark said Sunday that high winds and dry conditions were expected over the next 24 hours: "We're at a pivotal point now".

"These soldiers fought tirelessly through brutal conditions, so of course Trump canceled his trip to the cemetery due to rain", Colbert said sarcastically.

The MP tweeted that Mr Trump was not fit to represent the U.S. and said that he was a "pathetic inadequate" for not defying the weather "to pay his respects to the fallen".

It also underscored the hot-and-cold relationship that Mr Trump has had with Mr Macron, who has increasingly branded himself as a bulwark against the rising tide of Trump-style nationalism across Europe.

"The Florida Election should be called in favor of Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis in that large numbers of new ballots showed up out of nowhere, and many ballots are missing or forged", Trump tweeted, a completely false claim, as the ballots being counted were mailed in, including from military personnel serving overseas, who have until 10 days after the election ends to have their ballots make it to Florida to be counted.

In a series of morning tweets, Trump said it is "ridiculously unfair" for the United States to spend "massive amounts" of money on troops in Europe while experiencing "nothing but Trade Deficits and Losses" with the same counties that host the USA military.

"Rain didn't stop them and it shouldn't have stopped an American president". Meanwhile, the USA leader stressed again that Europe should do more on defense burden sharing.

Mr Macron defended his viewpoint, saying he shares Mr Trump's insistence that there be more burden sharing.

"It's just outrageous that our President wants to honor those who died in France, soldiers, and instead stays in the hotel and watching TV", said a former speechwriter of George W. Bush David Frum.
