  • Tesla names new chair to replace Elon Musk

Tesla said on Thursday that its new board chair replacing Elon Musk will be a technology and automotive industry veteran, Robyn Denholm of Australia's Telstra.

Her appointment is effective immediately.

Tesla said Denholm will be serving as chair on a full-time basis.

Tesla has endured a hard few months, following comments Mr Musk made on social media in early August suggesting he had "funding secured" for a deal to take Tesla private.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission had charged Musk with securities fraud, alleging that he misled investors when he tweeted on August 7 that he had "funding secured" to privatize the electric automaker at $420 a share, a substantial premium over its share price at the time.

Denholm, the chief financial officer of Australian telecommunications firm Telstra, has served on Tesla's board since 2014 but has fewer ties to Musk than most of the company's directors, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

The electric auto company said today in a statement that Denholm will leave Telstra after a six-month notice period with Australia's biggest telecoms company.

Tesla has appointed Robyn Denholm as its chairwoman after Elon Musk was forced to stand down in a boardroom shake-up at the electric carmaker.

Besides Telstra, Denholm has worked in other tech companies such as Juniper Networks and Sun Microsystems, and she also worked for Toyota, the statement added. Mr Musk was also obliged to relinquish his role as chairman for three years. "I look forward to working even more closely with Robyn as we continue accelerating the advent of sustainable energy".

"I believe in this company, I believe in its mission and I look forward to helping Elon and the Tesla team achieve sustainable profitability and drive long-term shareholder value", Ms Denholm said.

Investors had also called for stronger oversight of Mr Musk after his erratic behaviour attracted attention.

The tweet was one of a number of public statements by Musk that raised questions in the industry about his aptness to lead the company.
