Sumatra plane passengers refuse to fly with stinking durian cargo

A journalist from the Indonesia news agency Antara said arguments between some passengers and flight attendants nearly ended up in physical blows, according to the ABC.

Around two tonnes of durian, the world's stinkiest fruit, was in the cargo hold of the Sriwijaya Air flight, bound for Jakarta from Bengkulu.

The airline defended its decision to load durian on the plane but said that going forward it would investigate other methods of transporting the fruit to keep from disrupting passengers.

The Indonesia flight was due to travel between Sumatra and Jakarta on Monday morning, when travellers realised (by catching a whiff of it) they'd be journeying in the company of crates full of durian fruit. "Even with the husk intact, the notorious Asian fruit has such a potent stench that it's banned on the Singapore Rapid Mass Transit".

Durian is considered a delicacy in many parts of Asia but it attracts a lot of negative attention thanks to its "raw sewage"-like smell".

For those not in the know about the fruit's smell, food writer Richard Sterling once wrote, "its odor is best described as...turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock".

Boks adamant they'll emulate Farrell 'tackle'
Australian referee Angus Gardner was fine with the tackle and blew the final whistle for a 12-11 defeat for the Boks. If that is right, we should also start tackling like that.

"When I entered the plane, I could already smell the scent of durian".

Passenger Amir Zidane said, in a Facebook post, that he had flagged the issue with a member of the cabin crew. His Facebook post about the incident has been shard more than 20,000 times as of Wednesday afternoon.

Crew allegedly told him that the smell would go away once the flight was in the air.

Staff finally unloaded the fruit and the plane took off an hour later, reaching Jakarta safely.

"It's normal for every airline to carry durian during a flight as long as it is packaged properly and put inside the cargo hold in accordance with the standards and procedures", Kyodo News quoted Maya as saying in a statement.

Eventually, they were all asked to leave the plane while the crew unloaded the durian.
