The A340-500s that plied the route until 2013 had 58,870 gallons for only 100 customers.
The new route will be undertaken by the new Airbus A350-900 Ultra Long Range (ULR) aircraft, and will feature only premium economy and business class seats. That's followed by the United States carrier's Houtson-Sydney flight of 13,834 km (8596nm) and 17 hours 50 minutes.
Since the weather is smooth, the flight to Newark airport is estimated to last 18 hours and 45 minutes.
The plane was carrying 150 passengers and 17 crew members as it traveled 10,250 miles (16,500 kilometers).

For the flight crew - which includes two first officers and a 13-strong cabin contingent - the work load will be split into shifts, with each pilot having a minimum eight hours of rest during the flight.
Singapore Airlines launched the record-breaking route in 2004, but canceled it nine years later because of rising fuel prices. By using this system, the plan burns 25 percent less fuel as compared to the other aircraft with the similar size, said Airbus. The Singapore to NY leg, which takes off on Oct 11, is expected to take 17 hours and 50 minutes, and the return trip is 18 hours and 30 minutes.
The A350 is these days considered the go-to plane for long-haul flights, nudging out the A380, which was previously the flagship for such long distance journeys, and which carries up to 850 passengers, more than twice the number of the A350.
Since passengers will be cooped up in the flight for close to 19 hours, the airline will serve a "Wellness Set Menu", offering diverse food options.
