Google to shut down Google Plus after user information exposed

  • Google+ shuts after bug allowed third-party developers to access user profile data

According to a report published Monday by The Wall Street Journal, the vulnerability wasn't disclosed because Google didn't want to be subjected to regulatory scrutiny from lawmakers. Google says that there was no evidence that the information was misused, but that a total of 438 apps had access.

Google+ was launched in June, 2011 as a way to compete with other social networks such as Facebook. It is a root-and-branch review of third-party developer access to Google accounts and Android device data and of our philosophy around apps' data access, he wrote.

Google has finally given up on its aspirations to take on Facebook by shutting down its only social media platform Google Plus.

The WSJ reported that the exposure dates back to 2015, although the company didn't comment on how long information was exposed.

The issue with Google's actions over the Google+ data breach, however, was not with how it fixed the bug, as it did so right away.

Speaking about the exposed data, Google said on Monday: "We found no evidence that any developer was aware of this bug, or abusing the API, and we found no evidence that any profile data was misused". Moving forward, Google will only allow apps that specifically enhance email functionality to access the data.

The company says it discovered and patched the issue in March but decided not to disclose it immediately. Google CEO Sundar Pichai was informed of the plan to hide the security incident from the general public.

"We are shutting down Google+ for consumers", Smith added, admitting that the product was, at best, underwhelming.

After the security breach in one of the Google+ APIs, Google has not only chose to shut down Google+'s consumer version but they are also looking to make major changes in its developer tools to tighten the security. "Our goal is to support a wide range of useful apps, while ensuring that everyone is confident that their data is secure".

Those who are very panicked may find solace in the fact that Google did state that the firm only keeps API log data for two weeks.

Google has admitted that adoption of the its social network and subsequent user engagement has been low, with 90% of Google+ user sessions lasting for less than five seconds.
