Saudi officials say Khashoggi left through an alternate exit, but have offered no proof to support that contention.

"Would be nice to definitively rule out that the Saudis are paying the president massive bribes in exchange for tacit approval for murdering critics!"

"White House National Security Advisor, Ambassador John Bolton, and White House Senior Advisor, Jared Kushner, spoke to Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman yesterday about the missing Washington Post journalist", she said on October 10.

The apparent outing of members of the Saudi security services will add to growing worldwide pressure on the kingdom, which faces accusations from Turkey of having murdered and dismembered Mr Khashoggi when he went to the consulate on October 2. His disappearance has triggered a widening investigation by Turkish authorities, amid fears the journalist was killed inside the consulate. This has led to "speculation by officials and analysts in multiple countries", according to the Post, that the original plan may have been to capture Khashoggi and take him back to Saudi Arabia, and that the journalist had been killed when that plan somehow went south.

In an op-ed in the Washington Post on Tuesday, she implored the president and his wife to "help shed light on Jamal's disappearance".

"We have seen conflicting reports on the safety and whereabouts of prominent Saudi journalist and Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi", Pompeo said in a statement. Again it's an act that we can take without passing legislation.

Britain's foreign secretary on Thursday warned that Saudi Arabia faces "serious consequences" if the suspicions of Turkish officials that journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul turn out to be true.

Khashoggi had gone to the consulate in Istanbul to get paperwork he needed for his upcoming marriage while his Turkish fiancee waited outside.

'I don't know how I can keep living if he was abducted or killed in Turkey, ' the 36-year-old wrote in the Washington Post, the paper Mr Khashoggi worked for. It was not clear whether the Saudis meant to arrest and interrogate Khashoggi or to kill him, or if the United States warned Khashoggi that he was a target, this person said. Saudi Arabia denies knowing anything about his fate, saying that he left the building.

Mr. Trump told reporters earlier on Wednesday that his administration has been in contact with the "highest level" of officials in the Saudi government, and had asked about Khashoggi's disappearance.

As Corker suggested, the letter does indicate that the strengthening alliance between the Trump administration and the Saudi government may not preclude imposing sanctions.

Social media sleuths identified another man from the squad as a senior crimes scene investigator in Saudi Arabia. "I've told them they have to pay for their military". Trump said that Khashoggi's fiancée had sent him a letter and may come to the White House soon.

The United States has called for a transparent investigation, amid warnings by USA lawmakers of serious repercussions if suspicions of a murder were borne out.

Saudi Arabia has repeatedly insisted that the allegations from Turkey are "baseless" and Mr Trump has been reluctant to criticise the regime, describing their relationship as "excellent".
