Banksy Pranks Auction House, Shreds $1 Million Artwork

  • The artwork was shredded moment after going under the hammer for $1.7m

But, was the auction house in on the stunt? "They check everything", he said. "I think Banksy would find this all very amusing", she said. "But it doesn't feel authentic".

Banksy, meanwhile, took to social media to poke yet more fun, uploading a picture of the shocked crowd inside the auction house, writing: "Going, going, gone".

Never had we seen such a scene during an auction.

I expect it would be [worth] much more now than it was on Friday.

Last week's self-destruction was the latest in a long history of anti-establishment statements by the street artist.

Ian Syer, co-Founder of MyArtBroker.com said: "Banksy is unique to the art world". He also claims that he's "not in on the ruse", but the paper says it's "unclear" whether Banksy had another inside man to help him pull this prank off, or if he was somehow able to arrange it all on his own.

"You could argue that the work is now more valuable ..."

Forecasters: Michael quickly closing in on Category 3 hurricane
According to records going back to 1851, no storm Category 4 or greater has ever made landfall in this part of the state. The base's aircraft, which include F-22 Raptors, were flown hundreds of miles away as a precaution, a spokesman said.

The painting was the final item to be auctioned at Sotheby's in London, which was sold for just over £1 million (RM 5.45 million).

Graffiti's criminality is the reason for this mystery - but just who is Banksy?

In 2005, he hung an image of a spear-toting ancient human pushing a shopping cart in the British Museum, where it remained for several days before being discovered.

While it is still being debated around the world what art really is and who it really is for, one artist laid it clear what art should not be.

In 2010, the documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop premiered and was a global sensation, earning an Oscar nomination and placing further pressure on Banksy's anonymity. "He's always thinking in a multi-layered way, and that's part of his genius".

By the year 2000, Banksy had adopted his now-signature style of stencilling and his works became widely known in Bristol and London.

For an artist who's known for his stunts, this could be Banksy's most ideal art world prank.

Mehdi Ben Cheikh, a Parisian street art specialist, said the stunt was "in the same vein as his performance in NY, which questions and criticises the limits of the art market".
