According to Dona Sarkar, who runs the Windows Insider Program, users who have been affected by the crisis need stop using their machine, and contact Microsoft directly. If you manually downloaded the Windows 10 October Update, Microsoft asks that you "please don't install it and wait until new media is available." .

Microsoft's decision is in response to a growing number of complaints from users who say the update deleted files in their user Documents and Photos folders - in some instances resulting in the loss of many thousands of files dating back years.

Users started reporting this issue on Reddit and Microsoft's support forums shortly after Redmond released the update on October 2.

If you have yet to update to Windows 10 October 2018 update, you may well have had a lucky escape.

"Last night I updated to 1809, and it all went smoothly, but then I find that all my files in Documents are DELETED. Gone. Poof. This included many crucial documents and financial info", wrote Stuart Dole on a forum on the Microsoft website.

Statement from Microsoft over the Windows 10 update version 1809 problem

After its "Windows 10 April 2018" update, the tech giant in September had announced a refreshed "Windows 10 October 2018 Update" with new features and enhancements for over 700 million devices running Windows 10. In a tweet, Sarkar said that technical support teams "have the tools to get you back to a good state".

So the issue is being investigated, but how did Microsoft miss it in the first place? One user on the Microsoft support board claimed to have lost 220 gigabytes of files.

The Wondows 10 update rolled out globally on October 2.

Presumably the reports got missed in the noise that is the Feedback Hub, didn't get enough upvotes to register, or the problem couldn't be replicated in Microsoft testing and was therefore considered too low priority to worry about.
