Man uses meteorite as doorstop, finds out it's worth $100G

  • The rock used as a doorstop was determined to be a 22-pound meteorite

All that changed when an unnamed man from Grand Rapids, Michigan asked her to examine a rock he had in his possession since he bought a farm in 1988.

The rock, which at the time was used to prop open doors, was taken by the farm's new owner when he eventually sold the property, and only just got around to seeing if it was actually a true meteorite.

"For 18 years, the answer has been categorically "no" - meteor wrongs, not meteorites", she said in a statement.

"I could tell right away that this was something special", she said.

The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., corroborated Sirbescu's analysis that the 22-pound "rock" is, indeed, a meteorite, and is apparently the sixth-largest of its type to be discovered in MI. "It's the most valuable specimen I have ever held in my life, monetarily and scientifically".

Ms Siberscu still wanted a second opinion and sent off a slice of the rock to the Smithsonian Institution. He added the man buying the property could have it.

He said the farmer told him it was a meteorite that plunged to Earth in the 1930s - making "a heck of a noise when it hit" - and that he and his dad dug out the still-warm rock from a crater they found the next morning.

SpaceX Launch - October 7
Saocom-1A has an L-band payload created to study soil moisture for agriculture, disaster monitoring and scientific research. Then a secondary challenge: SpaceX will try to land the first stage of their rocket back at a landing zone.

It has been named the "Edmore" meteorite after the town in which the farm is located.

The man even let his kids take the rock to school for show-and-tell throughout the years.

"I said, 'Wait a minute".

Researchers discovered the meteorite has rare metals. According to the report, the man had been using the meteorite as a doorstop for the last 30 years.

"What typically happens with these at this point is that meteorites can either be sold and shown in a museum or sold to collectors and sellers looking to make a profit", Sirbescu said.

The Smithsonian Institution and a mineral museum in ME are now looking into purchasing the meteorite for display.

Scientists studied this space rock at Central Michigan University. As CMU notes, the man has pledged to donate 10% of the sale price to the university as a token of gratitude for helping him identify it.
