Pompeo met with Kim for about two hours, according to a pool report from CBS' Kylie Atwood, the only USA journalist who accompanied the secretary on his trip.

So, with Biegun accompanying Pompeo, hopefully the two negotiators were able to make some progress in their talks. "After having a nice meeting we can enjoy a meal together", Kim said as they walked down a hallway for lunch. Kim has repeatedly said he is committed to the "complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula", but the pledge has been criticised as overly vague by observers.

Trump will likely be tempted to hold such a summit quickly-and possibly even in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang-to make history and drive headlines, pointing to another success right before the midterm elections.

Had a good trip to #Pyongyang to meet with Chairman Kim.

Aside from Pompeo, the USA side included Stephen Biegun, the new US special envoy for North Korea, and Andrew Kim, who heads a Korea working group at the CIA that Pompeo set up while he was running the agency.

Pompeo visited Tokyo on Friday and is also due to travel to Beijing before returning home on Monday.

The weekend trip marked Pompeo's fourth visit to North Korea, whose relationship with the United States has been mixed in the wake of President Donald Trump's summit in June with Kim.

Mr Pompeo has angered North Korea by insisting that global sanctions against it must continue until it renounces its nuclear weapons.

India, Russia forge S-400 missile deal; ignore U.S. threat
Donald Trump's administration has explicitly urged its ally India against buying the S-400 Triumf missile system . Moscow has already started delivering undisclosed number of the S-400 missile systems to Beijing.

Earlier, Pompeo said he and Kim Jong-un have made further progress. On that occasion, he did not meet Kim.

Pompeo has repeatedly refused to discuss details of negotiations, including a US position on North Korea's demand for a declared end to the Korean War and a proposal from Seoul for such a declaration to be accompanied by a shutdown of the North's main known nuclear facility.

Mr Pompeo travelled on to South Korea for a meeting with President Moon Jae-in following his meeting in Pyongyang.

Pompeo said he wanted "a fully coordinated, unified view of how to proceed, which will be what is needed if we are going to be successful in denuclearizing North Korea".

Kang told the newspaper that the tradeoff would mark "a huge step forward in denuclearization".

"It wasn't easy for me to go out and speak about what happened to me because it wasn't easy, and specifically for women in the Middle East to go and talk about (being) sex slaves", she said in English by phone from Cambridge in the U.S. state of MA.

When the average U.S. voter "no longer hears the president saying "fire and fury" but hears him saying peace, they believe he has actually made progress towards it, even if arms control people say we've made no progress of a material nature at all", Paal said.

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho told the United Nations last month that continued sanctions were deepening the North's mistrust of the United States and there was no way Pyongyang would give up its nuclear weapons unilaterally under such circumstances. USA officials have thus far said sanctions will remain in place until the North's denuclearization is fully verified.
