  • The rock used as a doorstop was determined to be a 22-pound meteorite

The man then chose to take his rock to Mona Sirbescu, a geology faculty member in earth and atmospheric sciences at Central Michigan University.

"For 18 years, the answer has been categorically "no" - meteor-wrongs, not meteorites", Sibescu said in a Thursday statement, according to CNN.

The 22-plus-pound meteorite turned out to be the sixth-largest in MI and was valued at $100,000.

'It's the most valuable specimen I have ever held in my life, monetarily and scientifically, ' Dr Sirbescu said.

Sirbescu said this is the sixth-largest meteorite on record to be found in MI.

The man named David, who didn't want his last name used says the rock has been used as a doorstop in a barn for decades.

The new owner came into possession of the meteorite after the farm was sold in 1988.

The farmer told the man that it was part of the property so he could have it.

If you work hard, you earn it, you deserve it, and that's what we try to do mixed up with very good football, that's the plan. In the corresponding Premier League fixture the champions conceded three times in 10 minutes, going down 4-3.

Ms Siberscu still wanted a second opinion and sent off a slice of the rock to the Smithsonian Institution. The farmer and his father recovered it in the morning, digging it free - it was reportedly still warm to the touch when retrieved.

Upon receiving the meteorite, Sirbescu evaluated it and discovered it was an iron-nickel meteorite, composed of 8 to 8.5 percent iron and 11.5 percent nickel.

Then, "I said, wait a minute. I wonder how much mine is worth", he said.

The rock has sat patiently by the unnamed man's door for three decades, taking the occasional field trip to school with his children for show and tell.

Thousands of meteorites hit the earth each year, but most go unnoticed because they land in the ocean, or away from cities and towns.

The Smithsonian is considering purchasing the meteorite and adding it to the museum's collection.

The meteorite's owner said he will donate 10 per cent of the sale amount to the university. It will be used as funding for students of earth and atmospheric sciences. A colleague there further analyzed the sample, including with an acid test to reveal the Widmanstätten pattern, a property of most iron-nickel meteorites that can not be faked.
