Anti-Brexit campaigners" hopes that Labour would commit itself to a second referendum on European Union withdrawal suffered a setback after conference delegates were offered the opportunity only to keep the option of a so-called People's Vote "on the table'.

My understanding of what the discussion, certainly within my party has been all about, is: respect the referendum but the deal that comes back, if it's not acceptable to Parliament, we should have a general election or keep the option of a People's Vote on the deal on the table.

"We could well be looking towards a general election, and - do you know what? - we're ready for it".

A Momentum spokesman said: 'Although it stops short of open selections, the changes to how parliamentary candidates are selected will give members far more say in who represents them and help open the door to a new generation of MPs.

Corbyn wanted his conference to be an opportunity to sell his alternative vision for Britain's economy, pressing his argument for the renationalization of rail, mail and utilities, and to rally the party for a possible early election.

Corbyn has long said that a "People's Vote" is not off the table for his party, and a source close to the leadership urged caution over an as-yet unknown motion, repeating the Labour leader's stance that he does not support a second referendum.

As activists assembled in Liverpool for their annual gathering, Jeremy Corbyn said he would still prefer to force a general election by defeating Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit plan in the Commons.

"When conference votes to say Labour should campaign for a People's Vote on the terms of Brexit he will go along with it".

Mr Corbyn declined to say which way he would vote in any new in-or-out poll, while pointing out he backed Remain in the 2016 referendum. The referendum "absolutely must include the right to remain in the EU", he said.

Starmer was asked by journalists about John McDonnell's comments following a Brexit fringe event at Labour party conference.

"We think the real people's vote would be a general election".

The key paragraph in the document states: "If we can not get a general election Labour must support all options remaining on the table, including campaigning for a public vote".

The rule change for future leadership contests does not alter the 10% threshold for the number of MPs' nominations which a candidate must gather to get on to the ballot paper, but also requires would-be leaders to secure nominations from 5% of constituency parties or 5% of members of trade unions or affiliated organisations.

He added: 'But I was elected to empower the members of the party.
