  • Driver plows into emus in attack described as 'sickening cruelty': video

A 20-year-old man from South Australia was named in the media by his ex-girlfriend as the offender but those claims have not been verified.

It comes after horrific mobile phone footage emerged on Wednesday, showing the man behind the wheel of a white 4WD hurtling down a dirt road at nearly 120km/h, chasing after a flock of emus.

The auto runs over about half a dozen of them, with the driver counting along and laughing.

The alleged incident took place on Pellaring Road at Cowangie in the Victoria's northwest, close to the SA border between September 1 and 20.

He'll also face a number of traffic charges, including speeding and using a mobile phone while driving.

The man filmed himself laughing as he ran over and killed numerous emus on a dirt road.

She added that the RSCPA was "shocked and horrified" by the footage, which showed the man appearing to deliberately hit the birds running from his vehicle.

It is not exactly clear when or where the video was recorded.

The RSPCA has viewed the vision and vowed to track down the man responsible for the "barbaric" act.

Police in Australia have arrested a man accused of deliberately killing several emu with his auto on a rural road and then posting a video of it online.

"It's distressing, it's very distressing", RSPCA's Cheryl Doudle told 9NEWS.

The animal welfare organisation on Thursday pleaded for help to identify him and is now working closely with police.
