Brett Kavanaugh Assault Accuser Christine Blasey Ford Requests Judiciary Hearing Delay

  • Trump feels 'terribly' for Kavanaugh; Dems want FBI probe

Both Kavanaugh and the woman who has accused him of physically and sexually assaulting her when they were in high school, Christine Blasey Ford, have been asked to testify before the committee next Monday, though it's uncertain that will occur.

There are growing calls for Mark Judge to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee as it considers allegations of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh, but Judge appears unwilling to speak publicly on the matter.

Ford's lawyers say she has been the target of "vicious harassment and even death threats" since coming forward with her story.

After the Senate Judiciary Committee's planned vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation on Thursday was delayed, the committee announced on Monday it would hold a public hearing next week for Kavanaugh and Ford.

Katz did not respond to Reuters requests for comment.

Blasey Ford anxious that coming forward with the allegations against Kavanaugh would lead to personal attacks against her, which have already begun.

According to Ford, the alleged incident took place during the summer in the early 1980s. And in an unusually personal swipe, Schumer said McConnell was showing "unmitigated gall" to oppose delaying Kavanaugh's nomination after refusing for most of 2016 to consider President Barack Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland to the court after Antonin Scalia died.

Ford detailed her allegation in a letter sent in July to Senator Dianne Feinstein, the committee's top Democrat.

Ford's husband, Russell, put that idea nicely in an interview with The Washington Post, which initially broke the news of the accuser's identity.

The claim that Kavanaugh assaulted a woman while in high school now gives those endangered Democrats an escape hatch.

"The public deserves a thorough process not a rushed job", she said.

"I think this is an outcome he fears nearly more than any other", Gornstein said.

With fragile GOP majorities of just 11-10 on the Judiciary committee and 51-49 in the full Senate, Republican leaders had little room for defectors without risking a humiliating defeat of Trump's nominee to replace retired Justice Anthony Kennedy.

GOP Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee - among a handful of Republicans who insisted on hearing from Ford before voting - said it would be a "shame" if Ford didn't show up to testify. The delay makes it increasingly hard for Kavanaugh to win approval by October 1, when the new session of the Supreme Court begins.

The lawyers for Ford predicted the hearing, as now scheduled, "would include interrogation by senators who appear to have made up their minds" that she is "mistaken" and mixed up.

Democrats see their arguments about treating women fairly as the best hope for either sinking the appellate judge's nomination or, should Kavanaugh win confirmation, amplifying their appeals to female voters in November.

Trump says he wants a "full process" to investigate the allegations.

"We have reached out to her in the last 36 hours three or four times by email, and we've not heard from them, so it kind of raises the question do they want to, do they want to come to the public hearing or not?" he told political blog hughhewitt.com. Thomas was ultimately confirmed, but only after a nasty televised hearing in which Hill faced pointed questions from Republican senators and the nominee said he was the victim of "a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks". The book featured a character named Bart O'Kavanaugh, whom many believe to be based on the Supreme Court nominee, who "passes out drunk and throws up in a vehicle". "The responsibility falls to us", Hatch wrote, reiterating Grassley's offer to let Ford testify before the Judiciary Committee.

A lawyer for Ford has said that the alleged incident is viewed by Ford as attempted rape, a crime she believes would have happened had Kavanaugh not been so intoxicated at the time that she managed to get away.
