  • Typhoon Lashes South China After Killing 64 in Philippines

At least 100 people in the Philippines are feared dead as a result of Typhoon Mangkhut, including at least 40 people trapped in a bunkhouse buried in a landslide in a northern province.

Macau closed casinos for the first time and the Hong Kong Observatory warned people to stay away from the Victoria Harbour landmark, where storm surges battered the sandbag-reinforced waterfront.

Super Typhoon Mangkhut landed at 5 p.m. on Sunday on the coast of Jiangmen City, south China's Guangdong Province, packing winds up to 162 km per hour, according to the provincial meteorological station.

Boats were thrown onto the shore by powerful waves and the enormous rainfall has brought fears of landslides, although none have yet been reported in Hong Kong.

Authorities in southern China had issued a red alert, the most severe warning, as the national meteorological center said the densely populated region would face a "severe test caused by wind and rain".

In Hong Kong, a video posted online by residents showed the top corner of an old building break and fall off while in another video, a tall building swayed as strong winds blew.

Hundreds of flights were cancelled.

The paper said the heavy rains brought storm surges of 3 metres around Hong Kong.

"It was not so severe as we expected it to be because earlier it was noted it would also be strong", said President Rodrigo Duterte, following an aerial survey of some affected areas.

Mr Ka-chiu added: "Each department must have a sense of crisis, make a comprehensive assessment and plan, and prepare for the worst".

Referee Tony Corrente explained after the game officials believed Matthews picked up Cousins and drove him into the ground. He had to be spot-on, faced with a small window to score a touchdown and nail the 2-point conversion to force overtime.

All flights were cancelled in airports of Guangzhou and Shenzhen and will be resumed starting 8 a.m. on Monday. Hainan Airlines cancelled 234 flights in the cities of Haikou, Sanya, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai scheduled this weekend.

Macau has been cautious this time, with officials saying it shut casino gambling operations late on Saturday and China's People's Liberation Army on standby for any disaster relief assistance. It's only the 15th time in the last 60 years that a T10 has been hoisted; the last was for Super Typhoon Hato last year.

Foreign aid has begun to trickle in for victims of the typhoon, with Australia pledging to provide more than US$572,000 worth of emergency supplies, such as sleeping mats, blankets and hygiene kits for up to 25,000 people.

China has ordered thousands of boats to return to harbor, and evacuated thousands of offshore oil platform workers, the state news agency, Xinhua, said.

Twenty deaths in the Cordillera region on the main Philippines island of Luzon and four in nearby Nueva Vizcaya province were caused by landslides.

While the death toll is now 54, with 32 people injured and 42 more missing, this is likely to rise in the coming days as rescue teams work to locate 36 people believed to be buried beneath landslides in the Cordillera Administrative Region, in the north of Luzon island.

It has been given a number 10 signal - the highest possible - making it equivalent in strength to a hurricane.

Today's havoc comes after the typhoon tore across the Philippines northern island on Saturday, leaving a trail of destruction, killing more than 50 people, many of them in landslides, according to the government. A massive evacuation ahead of Mangkhut helped lessen potential casualties, with about 87,000 people evacuating from high-risk areas, officials said.

Three more deaths have been reported in northeastern Cagayan province, where the typhoon made landfall.

"They thought they were really safe there", the mayor said.
