Tropical Storm Florence brings heavy rain and gusty winds

Hurricane Florence hit parts of Carolinas hard Thursday and Friday, and while many people evacuated these two men say that a lot of animals were left behind.

About 10 million people could be affected by the storm. Tropical Storm Force winds extend 175 miles from the center.

Forecasters warned that drenching rains of 1 to 3½ feet (30 centimeters to 1 meter) as the hurricane-turned-tropical storm crawls westward across North and SC could trigger epic flooding well inland over the next few days. However, the main risk is, and always has been, life threatening flooding.

100 miles per hour winds raged as the storm made landfall.

Ocean water inundation may diminish, the flood threat from heavy rain will continue: "This storm will be a marathon vs. a sprint", the National Weather Service said.

About 600,000 homes and businesses were without power in North Carolina.

About 1,600 animals at the North Carolina Zoo are hunkered down, with zoo workers moving swiftly to get elephants, giraffes, chimpanzees and hundreds of other species indoors to safety.
