  • Hurricane Florence Could Kill 'A Lot Of People' As It Batters US Coast

The powerful Category 1 storm is making its way south along the Carolina coast hours after making technical landfall early Friday morning.

Forecasters say although Florence is now a tropical storm, it will continue to threaten North and SC with powerful winds and catastrophic freshwater flooding.

"We're estimating we've rescued 150-200", New Bern Police Lt. David Daniels said early Friday morning.

It is expected to move across parts of south-eastern North Carolina and eastern SC on Friday and Saturday, then head north over the western Carolinas and central Appalachian Mountains early next week, the NHC said.

"It's an uninvited brute who doesn't want to leave", said North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.

Hurricane Florence remains on track to bring life-threatening storm surge and rainfall to coastal North and SC, the National Weather Service says.

Downed trees, branches on the hurricane-lashed streets of Wilmington, North Carolina.

With one grueling day behind them, the Carolinas on Friday grappled with rising water and cascading misery from a deadly and agonizingly slow-moving Tropical Storm Florence expected to linger through the weekend.

Duke Energy was reporting increasing power outages across the Piedmont, including 8,241 customers without power in Wake County, 1,557 in Chatham County, 728 in Durham County, and 920 in Orange County.

Flooding, Wind Threat Remains As Florence Closes In
Colgate, a Patriot League program from NY , had hotel rooms and meal plans locked down for the trip to Greenville, South Carolina. McMaster also warned of possible landslides in the Upstate, portions of which could get 10 inches of rain over the weekend.

Some of the worst flooding was in New Bern, where authorities were enforcing a curfew.

By Friday evening, Florence was downgraded to a tropical storm, its winds weakened to 112 km/h as it moved forward at 6km/h about 25 kilometres north of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

A view of Hurricane Florence is shown churning in the Atlantic Ocean in a west, north-westerly direction heading for the eastern coastline of the United States.

The National Weather Service said flash flooding was expected to continue through the rest of Friday in New Bern and surrounding areas.

The National Hurricane Center said Florence came ashore near the town of Wrightsville Beach, almost 10 kilometers east of the city of Wilmington, and is now inland near Cape Fear packing sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour with higher gusts. And she has seen reports of people fleeing to rooftops to escape high floodwaters. More than 60 people had to be rescued in another town as a cinderblock motel collapsed at the height of the storm's fury.

Operations at the ports of Wilmington, Charleston, South Carolina, and Norfolk in Virginia, which together handled 23 per cent of East Coast imports in 2017, have been disrupted by the storm.

Meteorologists expect the storm to hover over the Carolinas through Saturday as it moves inland, rolling over parts of Georgia and Tennessee into Sunday afternoon and then weakening to heavy rain and wind in traveling up the Appalachians toward the Northeast.

But it's not only North Carolinians who live along the coast who are being impacted by severe flooding. Roberts said numerous residents live near the Neuse and Trent rivers.

Utility companies said millions were expected to lose power and that restoring it could take weeks. "We are totally prepared", Trump said at the White House.
