  • '3,000 Did Not Die': Trump Rejects Hurricane Maria Death Toll In Puerto Rico

On September 13, President Trump tweeted: '3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico. The study concluded the number of people who died in the months that followed the storm, because of its effects, had been underestimated.

Trump recently went on another Twitter rampage, this time lying about his recovery efforts for Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria and Irma. "Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000", Trump tweeted.

"If a person died for any reason, like old age, just add them on to the list", he tweeted. I hate talking about politics and all of that, but I think this is about more than politics.

After the tweet, George Washington University - the entity that conducted the study which determined the death toll - released a statement saying it stood by its findings.

Carmen Yulín Cruz, Mayor of Puerto Rico's capital San Juan and vocal critic of Trump, tweeted her dismay at his latest offensive.

On Tuesday, when asked if there were lessons to be learned from the 2017 storm ahead of this year's hurricane season, Trump called the response to Maria "one of the best jobs that's ever been done with respect to what this is all about".

"We deserve and expect more from someone who holds the highest office in our country", Nelson said in statement. The death toll in Puerto Rico had been officially recorded as 64 for almost a year, despite convincing evidence that the figure was too low because official death certificates had failed to take into account the long-range impacts of the storm.

John McCain. And Navarro has been absolutely livid about Trump's recent claims that the 2975 death toll in Puerto Rico is merely a Democratic Party fabrication.

Hurricane Florence: North Carolina family's garage submerged in water
An intense wave, as well as heavy rains, will announce on Thursday on the coast of Las Carolinas, the arrival of Florence. Forecasters said "catastrophic" freshwater flooding was expected along waterways far from the coast of North and SC .

Dr. Carlos Santos-Burgoa - the lead researcher on the study and a well-known expert in global health, particularly Latin America - told The Associated Press that the initial figure of 64 deaths reflected only people whose death certificates cited the storm. Ocasio-Cortez's mother was born in Puerto Rico, so her familial ties to the island territory are strong.

But Trump has continued to praise his own government's response to the disaster in Puerto Rico.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Friday said she didn't want to dwell on the president's comments, but felt compelled to respond on behalf of hurricane victims.

The damage in Puerto Rico was widespread, leaving thousands without power for months.

The reference to GWU Research refers to the independent research study the Puerto Rican government commissioned to track the hurricane deaths.

This is not the first time Trump has tried to downplay the catastrophic hurricane, during his visit to the island soon after Maria hit, Trump said Puerto Ricans should be thankful it wasn't a "real catastrophe" like Hurricane Katrina.

Trump's tweets are not only disrespectful to the lives lost in Puerto Rico; they also assert a well-known trait of the president: no matter the tragedy, everything is always about him. "Don't play games with it, it's a big one", Trump warned Americans.
